The port shape is different, namely the earlier model ports have a small rounded cut out for the injector and the later ports had a wider, squarer cut out. La-Z-Link
La-Z-Link Whether or not the early style heads with the rounded cut out would be to narrow and interfere with the spray pattern of the later style injectors is an unknown as far as I know. Having said that, if the engine is out being rebuilt anyway you can lay the late model gasket over the head, mark off the excess material and remove it. I did that and it seals up fine with the later style gasket.
